- Graduation Year:
Memories of Tammy Fitch
I remember Tammy as being my first playmate in kindergarten, and I always liked her the rest of the way through school. If I remember correctly, she moved away for a little while then came back when we were in junior high? Anyway, Tammy was the first in our class to pass away.
I'm not sure if the rest of you remember, but graduation day was stifling hot in that gym with no air conditioner. We were sitting there listening to Robert Simpkins deliver a speech, melting down in our nylon cap and gowns... I don't remember much else, but I remember how he ended his speech. He said, "Look around you today, because it is the last time all of you will be together under the same roof ever again." I thought, reunions. Surely. When you're 18, life seems to be a sure thing for years to come, doesn't it?
Tammy passed away just a week or two after graduation. I had gone to Florida and when I got back home, the news of her death was crushing. I'd missed the funeral where I was out of town. Mr. Simpkins' words echoed in my head as a sobering truth. It just came too soon.
Rest in peace, Tammy. You're buried very near my mother, and every time I go to see her, I see your name on that mausoleum wall and remember you with great fondness.
